While back at Hotel Vesuvio, a short walk around the neighborhood will reveal the once grand houses from an earlier time. The neighborhood has undergone much needed renovations over the years which has restored some of its charm. The hotel’s stately exterior includes a sitting area with fresh flowers on the covered terrace overlooking the front gates. The food in the restaurant is well prepared and special diets can usually be accommodated. Close by you can also walk to Cafe Mundo which is a highly recommended restaurant. The pleasant staff will be happy to help you make advance reservations for a ride to the airport, arrange laundry or dry cleaning services, and can be found available at the desk around the clock. A safety buzzer at the front gate lets you walk in, and you can park your car within the hotel’s locked side gates as well.
Inside, the rooms are dated and small but clean and adequate with private baths (some rooms have tubs). Due to the typically mild temperatures in San Jose, the hotel does not have air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans and most rooms are vented into the hallway. Some rooms are wheelchair accessible and all are pet friendly for an additional fee. Smoking is not permitted. All in all, the hotel can be a good choice for those budget minded visiting downtown San Jose.
