The Pan American Highway reaches northwest from San Jose into the province of Guanacaste and goes all the way to the Nicaraguan border. On the eastern side of the highway are lush volcanic mountain ranges, on the west, famous dry forests, endangered worldwide, that lead you to exquisite beaches. Known as the driest province, the area enjoys an abundance of sunshine year-round creating a hot climate where light clothing is recommended.
Originally built in the 1800s as a vacation lodge for the 14th president and his wife, the hotel will give you a historical perspective of a different time. Next door is Las Pumas Rescue Center, a wildlife rehabilitation center for many kinds of injured or orphaned animals, including jaguars, pumas, parrots, and monkeys. Nearby, you can visit the Llanos de Cortez waterfalls or boat down the beautiful Corobici River.
Hacienda La Pacifica, reasonably priced, is an oasis for the traveler, a place to rest your heels, take a swim, have a couple of really well-prepared meals, and then go on your way refreshed. All rooms are clean and spacious, air-conditioned, and have wifi. A variety of room styles, featuring two beds to four bedrooms with lots of beds, can accommodate singles, couples, and groups. Some have complete kitchens.
