Overview

Its cabin style accommodations may seem a touch rustic, but Hotel Los Pinos has been featured in National Geographic’s book, Ultimate Journey for Two. This notable reference comes as no surprise as Los Pinos offers you breathtaking views, a spa, trails for hiking, a serene atmosphere, a children’s playground, a vegetable garden, and Wi-Fi. The hotel is located high up in Costa Rica’s unique mountainous cloud forest region of Monteverde in the province of Puntarenas.

The country of Costa Rica is bursting with natural beauty, kind people, and a diverse landscape. Monteverde is a shining example of all three. The cooler mountain air and luscious greenery create a fresh atmosphere to explore the ancient forests and highland wildlife. Guided tours by experienced naturalists can ensure you see the unusual cloud forest inhabitants while staying in the area.

A trip to Monteverde is a rich experience offering you the once in a lifetime opportunity to visit both cloud and rainforests together. Hiking in this area, you’ll likely spot some of the diverse wildlife, such as blue butterflies and brilliantly colored birds. You can also experience the ultimate in exhilaration by ziplining across the rainforest’s canopy. If you are feeling adventurous, try a horseback, ATV, or canyoning expedition. You may even choose to indulge in the area’s flavorful coffee as you learn the secret to farming the perfect bean on a coffee tour.

If you are traveling as a family, you will appreciate a stay at Hotel Los Pinos, as your children can burn off some energy at the hotel’s playground. You can also explore the trails on site that will lead you to a viewpoint where you can delight in a romantic or peaceful moment while taking in the magnificent rainforest view. A key feature of staying at this hotel is that you can pick your very own vegetables from its garden. Veggies come at a small fee, but the crisp, fresh taste is well worth it. If you would appreciate an afternoon of pampering, book a treatment at the Diamond Spa, which is at the top of the property.

As you rise in the morning, open your cabin’s windows and take in the unfettered view of Mother Nature. Cabins are located a fair distance from each other, so that you can experience a sense of privacy and savor the property’s tranquility. Every bungalow includes a fully stocked kitchenette that has a microwave, mini-fridge, stove, and utensils. The cabins feel more like tiny homes that feature a separate living room, an area for eating, and a private bath with hot water. While there is no restaurant on this property, the kitchenette allows you to cook personalized meals using fresh vegetables from the Los Pinos garden. For some more amenities, take a quick walk to reach a nearby grocery store, laundry mat, and bakery.

A little dated, but clean and great staff.

The hotel Los Pinos is ok. The room was big but not fantastic. The nature around was nice, though.

I did not like the double bed and the problem with base boards with holes in them but it has beautiful surroundings and grounds

An oasis of calm introspection. The trails were beautiful and hypnotizing. My wife and I loved that there was a working hydroponic farm onsite, as well as the coatis, amadillos, and agoutis were very sweet to see. I even got to gently remove a scorpion from under my knapsack! Love the hammock on the porch, plus my kid got to watch his football games on the satellite tv.

Brilliant!

Very nice and friendly staff. Loved the hiking trail to the overlook on the property. Good location for walking to the bakery in the morning. Enjoyed laying in the hammock to enjoy the wildlife.

Overall this was the best place we stayed in Costa Rica. Hotel Los Pinos is a very amazing place. Being so close to the cafe and some eating spots was great. We got up every morning and walked over to the cafe across the street. Our cabin was truly spectacular. We were able to cook at our place, which gave us a few home cooked meals. Must stay place in Costa Rica!

This hotel is SO beautiful and peaceful. It is surrounded by amazing nature. Our cabin was like a house tree, what a beautiful place! We love less crowded places so this was the right place for us! Staff was extremely nice and kind. 10/10. Also loved their more ecological view/service: less plastic bottles, more recycling, awesome!

The hotel set up was quite good with 3 seperate rooms but our room (middle one) did not have a closet only a few hooks for our clothing.

We enjoyed the group cabin. The staff treated us like family. We will have a great story (and no doubt will be exaggerated upon each retelling) about the agouti that saundered into our cabin.

great place not to far from stores and eateries

This is a friendly eco lodge with a great focus on sustainability. If I'm not mistaken there are older and newer lodges on site and we seem to have stayed in one of the older ones which could have benefitted from a makeover. But this is not to say that everything wasn't in perfect working order or that we didn't like it! The hotel is hidden away in the trees on a hill with quite some wildlife coming to the doorstep. We went up to the viewpoint which was very nice and got some salad from the gardens. The hotel is a bit away from the town centre, so if you're not keen to hike up a very steep hill for half an hour after your dinner, your restaurant choices are a bit limited. Also for some of the activities it would have been easier to have a car. However, there is a supermarket in easy walking distance (and a laundry service). We did a super interesting guided nature walk with ‘Johnny loves nature’ which I can thoroughly recommend.

Beds were a little hard. Beautiful landscape with lots of flowers and butterflies.

Keep in mind that there is no heat in the cabins. I understand that is common in the area. Like many tourists, I didn't bring quite enough warm wear for the mountain climate.

The staff was friendly, helpful and informative.
The cabin was lovely, clean, every convenience needed, comfortable bed.
Enjoyed the grounds, trails, garden, and saw lots of wild life.

Probably my favorite place. The climate was unique for a tropical location, weather was great (rain included!) and the casita was charming, comfortable and cozy. The fireplace was enjoyable as was the free firewood. The Organic garden was amazing and we really enjoyed eating from it. The staff was super helpful and accommodating.

Los Pinos Cabanas were great! I would definitely recommend the Superior cabins like ours. I don't remember this being on your list, PTW, but it should be. Wonderful, somewhat more rustic experience. Had great lettuce, pepper and tomato salads and beautiful views at the top of the property. The fireplace added wonderful ambiance. The folks here were very nice. Loved the quiet, privacy and green.

This eco-lodge was great. Raphael and Luis were very friendly and helpful. While there is no breakfast included, there is an excellent bakery across the street.
