Located on the outer edge of the Nicoya Peninsula in the Pacific northwest, Nosara attracts both surfing enthusiasts and holistic practitioners. The area includes five separate beaches each with its own individual characteristics. During dry season, from January to May, the unpaved roads in town can be quite dusty which makes staying up in this hillside retreat a smart alternative. In fact, the last hour or so of getting to Nosara is mostly on unpaved roads. The international airport in Liberia is about 2.5 hours away and it’s approximately 4 hours from the airport in San Jose. Luckily, Nosara has a landing strip so you can opt to take a local shuttle flight from the international airports for a more comfortable arrival in around 30 minutes. Arrangements can be made for the hotel’s shuttle to pick you up at the landing strip.
Horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, whale watching, boat cruises, and sport fishing are just some of the things you might like to do while in the area. But the main attraction at Playa Guiones is the world-class surf break that brings in surfers from around the world. Just north of Playa Guiones is a beautiful tree lined beach called Playa Pelada that offers excellent waves for beginners. A zipline tour can be arranged.
At nearby Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, if it’s the right time of the month, you can take a guided night tour to look for sea turtles lumbering on land to dig their nests. Or if you’re lucky, you might witness the baby turtles scuttling towards shore in the early mornings.
