Overview

Are you looking for an off-the-beaten-path discovery of untouched natural beauty combined with multiple adventures and luxury bungalows? Then Rio Perdido Thermal Springs and Hotel, located in the town of Bagaces, might be the destination you've been searching for. Only an hour away from the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, but located deep in the Guanacaste tropical dry forest where canyons collide bringing together hot and cold mineral waters, the private bungalows at Rio Perdido place you in the heart of a natural wonderland. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, honeymooners, and adventurous families with children over 8 years old who prefer the real deal, Rio Perdido provides the ultimate experience for discovering the remarkable interior tropical hot springs of Costa Rica.

Rio Perdido, meaning "lost river", carries its hot thermal mineral waters to the confluence of cool refreshing waters provided by Rio Blanco. The two rivers flow through tall canyon walls feeding the surrounding trees with their high mineral content creating a giant forest canopy. Underneath, a clear stream makes its way around boulders, gentle in places, and fast flowing in others. Among the tours offered by the hotel, you'll find white water tubing which can include up to Class lV rapids.

When the current owners bought the property, they discovered pottery identified by the National Museum as artifacts made by the indigenous Chorotega tribe, mostly wiped out by European conquerors 500 years ago. Luckily descendants handed down the skills of pottery making keeping their symbolic designs intact which can be found and purchased by visiting the pueblos of Guatil or San Vicente in the nearby Nicoya Peninsula.

The owners of Rio Perdido Thermal Hot Springs were inspired to protect and preserve the rich cultural history of the unique blended rivers area by using local sustainably farmed and fallen wood to build the bungalows and by putting 1500 acres under the protection of the national forestry agency.

There are several hiking paths through the forest, from a half mile to 3 miles long, which will lead you to a beautiful seasonal waterfall and across a hanging bridge until you reach elevations so high you can see three of Costa Rica's awesome volcanoes at once. Some of the trails you can walk on your own but for others, you will need to go with a guide for safety purposes. The hotel also has designated trails for experienced mountain bike enthusiasts who enjoy the challenges of pedaling uphill over rocky terrain and downhill plunges. These trails are from 5 to 15 miles long and not recommended for beginners. Fifteen platforms provide ziplining fun throughout the Rio Blanco canyon combined with a Tarzan Swing, a 90-foot challenge bridge, plus lateral suspension rock climbing ferratas, and a pendulum cable.

You can enjoy self guided hiking or you can visit three therapeutic naturally occurring mineral pools to find your ultimate comfort zone switching between cold, warm, and hot thermal waters.

Rio Perdido offers a unique yoga experience practicing within naturally carved out cliff areas, opening you to an expanse of surrounding energies lead by an expert yoga instructor. A choice of scenic overlooks provides the perfect meditative setting for taking the time to peacefully reflect on your inner connection to Nature.

The restaurant serves locally sourced food prepared by a chef specializing in Costa Rican cuisine and provides stunning panoramic views. Or you can ask about an outdoor evening dining option atop a floating platform suspended over the river and under the stars. Breakfast is complimentary.

Each of the elevated private bungalows features twin beds that can be transformed into one king bed, and can accomodate two single size beds. All have air conditioning, WiFi, a flat screen smart TV, minibar, coffee maker, safe, sofa, and private balcony with forest views. The center bungalows offer a projector instead of a smart TV. Finding yourself at Rio Perdido may create lasting memories for a lifetime.

Special Promo: Guests under 12 years old can enjoy our complimentary guided hikes and Canyon Adventure on stays through December 31, 2024.
