Formerly named the Barcelo Langosta Resort, the Occidental Tamarindo Resort is the only all-inclusive resort in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. Located in the Langosta neighborhood, the hotel offers easy access to the beaches and town of Tamarindo, which are only a few minutes drive or a 20-minute walk away. The beach in front of the hotel is scenic but not swimmer-friendly, so we'd recommend going to town for swimming and surfing or taking advantage of the resort's freeform swimming pool. Hotel amenities include a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, snack bar, buffet-style restaurant and bar, a la carte restaurant (reservations required and not included in the all-inclusive plan). The hotel also offers a fitness center, spa and beauty salon, souvenir shop, jewelry shop, tennis courts, resort activities, conference room, and internet connection (for a fee). Please note that the all-inclusive plan includes buffet meals, snacks, and domestic beverages at the bar. Top shelf or imported drinks and beverages are not included in the all-inclusive package but are available for a fee. In addition, internet is not included but available for a fee.
A few minute drive from the resort will lead you to the beaches and fun of Tamarindo. The bustling streets are lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. Bars serving local beers and tropical drinks play Latino music into the night. The gorgeous beaches offer swimming in some areas and surfing in others.
The Tamarindo area offers plenty of activities such as ATV and Canopy Combo, Barra Honda Cave Spelunking, Buena Vista Mega Combo Adventure that combines several adventurous tours, Canopy Monkey Jungle, Catamaran Cruise and Snorkeling, and Hacienda Pinilla's Golf course. Doing the Coastal Kayaking and Snorkeling Tour is time well spent and an excellent way to observe tropical islands, marine life, and the beautiful Pacific coastline. After paddling along and taking in the scenery, you will stop to snorkel above rock or coral formations and observe the fascinating marine life below. Frequently spotted species on this trip include dolphins, sea turtles and various tropical fish species, making this a highlight for many. Sports and nature lovers will enjoy the workout and the natural beauty that the Coastal Kayaking and Snorkeling Tour offers.
Of course, just hanging out at the resort can be fun or relaxing. The Occidental Tamarindo has a large swimming pool and lounge area for relaxation. The tennis courts and fitness facilities are open during regular hours so that you won't fall behind on your workout. Resort activities such as aerobics, beach volleyball, dance classes, archery, and darts are rotated throughout the week. The resort offers an entertainment program for kids and adults on a rotating schedule (not available every day). Also, there is a children's playground. Note that water sports such as kayaking, snorkeling, and other rentals or activities are NOT included in the all-inclusive plan.
For an additional fee, the resort offers a variety of spa services. The menu includes massages, facials, manicures and pedicures by professional therapists.
The Occidental has two restaurants, the Langosta Main Restaurant and the El Oceano Restaurant as well as two bars, the La Tortuga Lobby Bar and the Las Baulas Snack Bar. The Langosta Main Restaurant is open during specified hours for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving buffet style food. The El Oceano Restaurant offers a la carte dinner dining but requires reservations (reservations are often difficult to obtain, and food and drink are NOT included in the all-inclusive plan) and a three-night minimum stay at the resort to be eligible. The La Tortuga Lobby Bar is open daily from 17:00 - midnight. The Las Baulas Snack Bar is open from 10:00 to 19:00. Times are subject to change at the resort's discretion.
The 198 rooms at the Occidental Tamarindo Resort are spacious and well-equipped. All offer air-conditioning, cable TV, mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, safe deposit box, bathrobe and slippers, hairdryer, and either a balcony or terrace. The Superior Rooms are the smallest at 32 square meters and come with either a king or two double beds. The Duplex Suites are larger at 66 square meters, split between two floors. These rooms have a hot tub and ocean views from the balcony or terrace. The Master Suite Duplex is spread over two levels with 99 square meters of space, ocean and mangrove views, as well as a hot tub.

The description said there were three restaurants when really there was only one and it was buffet of mediocre food. The drinks that were actually included at the bars were very poor. The beach at the resort is barely swimmable as there are many rocks and it sits right on an estuary outlet which we were told was not safe due to crocodiles. The staff just didn't seem to care about the guests at all, very poor service. This was a fairly inexpensive resort, however, and the room was clean and the air conditioner worked. I probably wouldn't stay here again.

Beautiful resort, excellent beach and pool

Even though internet was listed as a hotel amenity, it was not included in our package. It cost $12/day/device to access the internet to check e-mails. With four devices in the family that is almost $150 for the three day visit.

Probably the worst hotel during our stay. Staff did not appear very friendly. Our shower broke the first day of our stay and was not fixed for the duration of our stay. Drinks were subpar, buffet was not great. Would not recommend this hotel

This was a nice looking resort but i was disappointed with some of the things at the resort. We arrived and went to have a shower the water was cold we called down they said they would send someone and they came to see what was wrong. Said they would be back waited almost an hour so we called back down they said it should be fixed , it wasn't so they came back and this happened a few more times so we said we would like a different room if it wasn't fixed when we came back from dinner, it wasnt and the guy we were talking to didn't even try and see about other rooms. We went down in the morning and talked to the front desk and they upgraded us without an issue and fixed with issue and told us what happened. After that they stay was better but still not what id expect from a 4 star all inclusive resort.

The staff did not speak English as well here as at Arenal Springs Resort and Spa. There were not enough evening activities for adults. The bar closed early (10:00), so we had to go into town for evening entertainment. Would have preferred a bar on site to stay open later with a band or DJ.

Wi-Fi was incredibly expensive but not very good, food was average.
