Set in the jungles of Tortuguero, the Rana Roja Lodge is eager to share the wonders of Tortuguero with you! This small 21-room lodge is only accessible by boat and surrounded by Tortuguero National Park and the famous Tortuguero Canals. Visitors will find dense jungles that are teeming with wildlife and a purely natural setting. Lodge amenities include tropical gardens, nature trails, restaurant and bar, swimming pool, spa services, and WiFi in some areas.
Tortuguero is one of the most inaccessible regions of Costa Rica. You can only get there by boat or airplane. The jungles are dense and loaded with rare and exotic animals including several species of monkeys, sloths, anteaters, several large cat species, including jaguars and pumas. Birdwatching in this region is incredible with toucans, rosette spoonbills, and even great green macaws! Of course, this region is also home to many reptiles and amphibians. The lodge is actually named after the small, red, poison dart frogs that can be found all over the jungle floor!
Your stay at the Rana Roja Lodge will include a couple of fun and enlightening tours. The boat ride through the Tortuguero Canals is a great way to not only experience the beauty of Tortuguero but also a fun way to find animals. As you cruise along the canals, your guide will keep an eye out for the many animals that live in the water and along the water's edge. Common sightings include howler and capuchin monkeys, crocodiles and caimans, river turtles, and three-toed sloths. The lodge also provides a transfer to and from Tortuguero town so you can experience the village, buy souvenirs, and pay your national park entrance fee at the ranger station. Please be prepared with $17 in cash per person.
Between activities, you can explore the amazing jungle and tropical gardens that surround the lodge. You can walk the trails and search for wildlife or take it easy by the tropical swimming pool. The lodge offers kayaks for rent - not included in your stay, that you can use to explore the canals around the lodge on your own. Spa services are also available but must be reserved ahead of time.
Your stay at the Rana Roja Lodge includes lunch and dinner on the day you arrive, three meals on your full days, and breakfast on the day you leave. Meals are typical Costa Rican dishes and are usually served buffet-style.
Similar to most ecolodges in Tortuguero, the lodge offers no-frills but comfortable guest rooms. All rooms have a private bathroom with hot water shower, a ceiling fan, and an in-room safe deposit box. The Bungalows are more spacious than the Standard Rooms and are also freestanding. The Standard Rooms have a shared balcony, whereas the Bungalows have a private balcony.
Important Notes: You must pay the $17 per person national park entrance fee when you go to the Tortuguero village. You are only permitted 25 pounds in luggage per person. If your luggage weighs more than that, you must pay an additional person fee which is $78. Please inform us AT LEAST A WEEK IN ADVANCE if you need to make alternative arrangements for your luggage. We will do our best to help and find a solution but cannot guarantee this. Also, keep in mind that this is the lodges policy.
