Overview

Whitewater rafters will love the Pacuare River Lodge, a unique stopping point to overnight on the banks of the Pacuare River. Individual screened cabins dotted along the river, with comfy beds and fantastic views, make for paradise camping! Washroom and showers are separate and shared. A central covered open-air restaurant provides all meals included in the rafting tours. Built as a base camp for whitewater rafting excursions, the lodge can also be enjoyed as a super rustic vacation spot where you, your friends, and your family can explore the surrounding jungle trails and waterfalls.

Located outside of San Jose, Costa Rica's capital city, and near the volcano town of Turrialba, the Pacuare River's fame for whitewater rafting brings tourists from all over the world. The Pacuare River Lodge found deep within the forest along the river can only be reached by raft, horseback or 4-wheel All-Terrain Vehicle. A representative from the lodge will meet you in town to show you a safe place to park your car. Then you'll meet your rafting, horseback riding or four-wheel ATV guide who will take you to the lodge, those last options are under request only.

The exciting rafting adventure down the Pacuare River includes Class lll to Class V rapids. The breathtaking beauty of the untouched wilderness surrounding the river provides an incredible backdrop. Guided hikes through the jungle will take you to thundering hundred-foot waterfalls and a natural waterslide with jacuzzi type pools of swirling water that you can jump in. Other local activities may include a trip to an indigenous village and kayaking lessons.

The lodge has several areas for wildlife viewing including patios overlooking the river and lots of hammocks to languidly gaze up at the sky. Birdwatchers will likely be whipping out their binoculars to get a closer look at all the different species of tropical birds living in the area. With very little electricity available at the lodge, the bright stars can dazzle you at night. The on-site restaurant provides healthy and hearty meals and tours even include wine and beer. Reviews rave about the food and candlelit dinners.

To maintain the pristine river conditions, the off-the-grid lodge uses solar and hydroelectric power with just enough energy so you can recharge your devices at night. The small wooden cabins have screen windows for natural ventilation and are far enough from each other to provide a sense of privacy. All cabins have patios that face the river, hammocks, and comfortable beds. The washrooms and showers shared between several cabins are easy to get to in the middle of the night. Note: plans are underway to build private bathrooms inisde the cabins in the near future so please check if this is important to you. The rooms do not have air-conditioning and the showers are cold water. Limited wi-fi access may be available. It's almost like camping only a whole lot more fun with all the pampering you'll get from the friendly staff!

This was a highlight of our trip! The owners and staff went out of their way to make out anniversary special - a bottle of wine and flowers cut from the gardens... The rafting was spectacular.
