This Puerto Viejo Canopy tour is an exhilarating trip across the tree tops and through the jungles of Costa Rica that are located just outside of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. It is north of the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge situated a few miles up the Caribbean coastline from the border of Panama.
Your tour begins with transportation from your hotel to the operation base which is located about half an hour outside of Puerto Viejo. The canopy tour of Puerto Viejo comes with a professional, certified guide who will show you how to use all equipment and go over safety procedures, as well as identify the wildlife that inhabits the forest. You will be suited up with a harness that will be connected to the zipline cable by a snap shackle, or carabiner for your safety.
The Puerto Viejo canopy tour consists of 13 ground and 9 aerial platforms with about 1.5 miles of zipline cables. You will have a guide at every platform to connect you to the next cable and another to receive you at the other end.
You will fly over the tree tops at altitudes of roughly 260 feet and, at the heart of the jungle, descend by zipline to the forest floor to enjoy a guided hike. While hiking, your naturalist guide will educate you on the various species of flora and fauna and can describe how the indigenous people of the area use these plants for health and wellness as they have for thousands of years.
After the hike, you will once again take to the air and not touch the ground again until the end of the course. Just before the last 2 zipline cables, you will have the opportunity to go on the Tarzan Swing.
The Tarzan Swing is just what it sounds like! From a platform 148 feet up in the air, you will be attached to a cable by one of the guides and then you’ll leap off the platform, swinging about 290 feet until the swinging stops. On the floor of the jungle an attendant will assist as you land, and disconnect you from the swing. Imagine the added adrenaline rush after sailing over the forest canopy!
This experience comes with bilingual guides, all zipline equipment and transportation from your hotel in Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Punta Uva. You will be provided with fruit and bottled water. One way transportation from your hotel can take from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on where you are staying. The entire tour including round trip transit and ziplining can take between 4 and 5 hours depending on the location of your hotel. Please wear comfortable, fully enclosed shoes and bring insect repellent. There is a weight limit of 260 lbs for this moderately physical adventure. Be sure to mention if there are any physical restrictions in your group.
The Canopy Zipline Terraventuras is available from Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, and Punta Uva

It was farther from Shawanda than I expected. I thought the tour was south of us, rather than north, Therefore, the commute was longer than expected.

It's just me...it felt too rushed in spots, not enough time to enjoy the 'zipping'. I felt singled out for an additional harness because of my age and size. The other female participant had more difficulty than I did - but she was younger and weighed less than I...it is a bit strenuous with climbing up the hills AND I'm grateful for the extra harness in the end. I'm just being a whiner....
