Overview

Embark on a journey of sensory delight as we begin our day at the Doka Coffee Estate, where a sumptuous breakfast awaits. Nestled within the vibrant heart of a thriving coffee plantation, this experience will immerse you in the time-honored artistry of coffee production, unveiling the secrets of Costa Rica's world-renowned coffee.

Here, you'll delve into the ancient techniques passed down through generations, learning from true coffee experts who have mastered the craft of cultivating, harvesting, and roasting the coveted Golden Bean. With hands-on participation, you'll gain a deep understanding of the meticulous process that transforms humble coffee cherries into the rich, aromatic brew enjoyed around the globe.

After this enlightening coffee journey, we'll venture onward to the captivating Poas Volcano National Park. As we ascend, you'll notice a palpable shift in temperature and a lush, cloud forest landscape that envelops you in its verdant embrace.

Standing at an imposing 2,708 meters (8,885 feet), the Poás Volcano is an active stratovolcano, a geological wonder that has erupted 40 times since 1828, including a remarkable event in April 2017. At its summit, a colossal mile-wide crater plunges 1,050 feet deep, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.

Our time at the volcano's rim will allow you to marvel at the main crater, where sulfur fumaroles release their ethereal mists. We'll embark on a scenic hike along a trail leading to the enchanting Botos Lagoon, all the while immersing ourselves in the diverse ecosystems that thrive within this protected park.

Please note that due to the altitude and the dynamic nature of the Poás Volcano, this tour is not recommended for individuals with heart conditions, high blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnant women, or young children.

As we wind our way up the mountain, the landscape transforms before your eyes. You'll witness not only the sprawling coffee plantations but also the verdant ferns, vibrant flowers, and thriving strawberry farms that paint a kaleidoscope of colors and visuals along our journey.

One-way transportation usually takes from 1 to 2 hours depending on the location of your hotel and traffic conditions. The total time of volcano hike and round trip transportation is typically between 5 and 6.5 hours.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes and you might like to have a jacket for the cooler altitude. Sun block is recommended as the sun can be quite strong this high up. You’ll also want to bring your camera and binoculars along.

Excellent tour. We had a bonus stop over at a coffee plantation. Guide was fantastic and she explained everything very clearly.
