Poas Volcano and the Heredia Highlands are located north of Alajuela. This is a beautiful region with cloud-shrouded mountains and coffee plantations. At only an hour from locations in Alajuela and an hour and a half from most places in San Jose, a visit to the highlands is a must for anybody spending time in the Central Valley.
