When should I reserve is a common question and depends on your individual expectations. There are hundreds of hotels in Costa Rica, just remember this is not a first world country. Few offer the combination of comfort, quality, service, convenience, which equates to overall value. To determine your expectations, consider asking yourself the following questions.
Track by giving a score of 1 – 5 following each question. (charts below)
1 = Unimportant.
2 = You are willing to sacrifice these factors.
3 = You take this factor into consideration when reserving hotels.
4 = Important consideration.
5 = Very important consideration.
Comfort: Is comfort a key consideration of your hotel stay? For example; is it important to you to have beds of a certain size or comfortable beds in general?
Score: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
Quality: Is the quality of a hotel an important consideration to you? For example; Do you consider it important to have a newer hotel with conveniences such as internet access, air conditioning, new TV, quality bathroom and shower fixtures that do not use electricity as a power source to heat the water (believe it or not, many shower fixtures are powered by electricity that conducts through the shower head!)?
Score: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
Service: Is good customer service important to you? For example; Do you expect your room to be cleaned daily by the the hotel staff? Do you expect to be assisted with your luggage? Do you expect the staff to assist you with questions about the area, or in general to be attentive?
Score: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
Convenience: Is convenience an important factor in your hotel stay? Do you like to stay in the quiet resort areas or closer to town to be near the action? Are you willing to pay more for off route transfers and tours if your hotel is not conveniently located? Are you willing to spend extra time and money to travel to and from tours?
Score: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
Overall Value: Overall value can be determined by combining of the aforementioned factors. If the accommodations have a good mixture of these attributes, it can be considered a hotel of high overall value. If not, the overall value would obviously be lowered.
