Your Costa Rican adventure begins the moment you land! If you're arriving at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) near San Jose, this in-depth...

SJO Airport: What to Expect

Two Airports, One Goal: Costa Rica has two international hubs: SJO, the larger airport close to the capital, and Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) serving the northwest. This guide focuses on SJO.

Modern Yet Manageable: Though it's the busiest in the country, SJO has a modern layout and isn't overly large. You'll find free Wifi, helpful (often English-speaking) staff, and facilities accessible for travelers with mobility restrictions.

The Arrival Process: Step by Step

Disembarking & Finding Your Way

After your flight, you'll follow well-marked hallways towards immigration. Stairs or escalators may be involved, but elevators are available if needed. Note: Connecting flights follow a different process.

Immigration

The Patience Part: Expect a line – it can be long depending on flight schedules. Maintain social distancing as instructed. Have your passport, health pass QR code (if applicable), and onward flight details handy. They'll stamp your passport and write in your visa length – double-check it! Traveling with youngsters or have mobility issues? Staff can often fast-track you.

Baggage Claim & Duty-Free Deals

Your bags await! On the way, note the first duty-free shop (there's another near baggage claim). SJO excels in alcohol prices – a quick buy here can save you later. Currency exchange isn't ideal at the airport, so hold off for now.

Local SIM Cards

A Tricky Situation If you need instant connectivity, buying a SIM card at SJO can be confusing. The former Kolbi provider booth is closed, and others may or may not be open. For guaranteed service, consider buying a SIM at a phone store outside the airport.

Customs: (Usually) A Breeze

Unless you're carrying something unusual, this is just a quick scan of your luggage. No forms, just a friendly glance from the official.

Exiting SJO: Your Transport Options

Pre-Arranged Private Transfers

Your private driver should be waiting with a sign just outside the exit doors. They'll help with luggage to a degree (remember, there is only one of them and they must stay with you after connecting with you) and take you to their nearby van. If you have a lot of luggage, consider paying a baggage handler a few dollars to help you carry your luggage. If you don't see your driver, scan the area again, as it is all but certain they are there. If you still can't find your driver and it is between 7 am - 9 pm, call our office (US phones, toll-free at 1-866-853-9426 ext.1) or locally at 2694-0400 ext.1. If it is after these hours, call our after-hours cellphone number, 8703-9142.

Rental Cars

Your agency's desk may be just before you exit. If not, they'll be waiting outside with a shuttle to their off-site office. Having trouble? Our office is here to help! (Include your office phone numbers)

Shared Shuttles

If you’ve opted for a complimentary shuttle through a hotel, they will pick you up outside of the airport. Look for the hotel’s name on a sign held by a driver. Remember, these shuttles usually only run hourly, so be patient. This is the reason we do not recommend hotel shuttles…

A Caveat to shared shuttle transportation companies such as Interbus (not airport shuttles): These vans don't directly service SJO. You might be able to arrange a pick-up at the nearby Holiday Inn – a short taxi ride away. Remember, shuttles have set schedules, making them risky for airport arrivals.

Official Taxis

Head for the taxi representative (right after customs). They'll guide you to an official orange taxi with a yellow medallion. These always use meters but be sure the meter has been reset!

Uber & Friends: Not So Simple

Ride-hailing apps aren't allowed directly at SJO. You'll need to exit and walk away from the terminal area.

The Power of Pura Vida: Don't panic!

Outside the airport, locals are friendly and often collaborate to help tourists connect with their services. Just be wary of unsolicited 'help' that might try to sell you something.

Hunger Pangs? Your Dining Options Are Limited

Sadly, the arrivals area lacks restaurants. There's basic vending near baggage claim, and once outside, Malinche Restaurant is steps away for Costa Rican fare and sandwiches.

You've Arrived! Now, Onward to Adventure

That's it! You've navigated SJO, and your Costa Rican journey is ready to take flight.  Let the 'pura vida' spirit flow, and enjoy every second!
